at one year

it happened that as he was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, “Blessed be the womb that bore you and the breasts that fed you!”  Luke 11.27

to be the one who is the sole source of life for a child, and to have that source be from your own body, is a unique experience.  nursing requires your loving surrender to the rhythm, needs and life energy of someone else.  the nursing mother is quite literally the food that sustains life.  to give of one’s own substance in this way speaks to me of the feeding that Christ does, through his own body, a feeding that sustains the Christian community.
