Adventures in Books

I don’t normally quote C.S. Lewis.  He’s written so much, it seems there’s always a fitting quote no matter the topic.  That makes me nervous somehow.  But this one’s has been on my mind since we finished our most recent read alouds.

C S Lewis quote

Little Britches

We just finished reading Little Britches: When Father and I Were Ranchers by Ralph Moody.  We spend a lot of time with Laura Ingalls, Anne Shirley, and Lizzy Bennett.  I thought it was high time we read a book that was certifiably boy approved!  Everyone loved Ralph’s adventures and the descriptions of the cowboys and animals.  I also really loved hearing how his father and mother dealt with their children.  They were wise, quiet people who kept a high standard, and let Raph make his own mistakes.

Swallows and AmazonsAnd we just finished listening to Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome.  We’ve spent many a happy morning this winter folding laundry together and listening to this audiobook.  We loved hearing about their life camping out on Wildcat Island.  I loved listening to the relationship dynamics between the children themselves and between them and their parents.  Much like the Moody parents, Mrs. Walker creates a space of love and respect for her children.  A space where they can own their mistakes and make better choices.

Now I don’t imagine any of us will be ranching or messing about in boats any time soon.  But the way these fictional families love and care for each other will stay with me for a long time.

I’ve updated my Goodreads page…you can always find the link down at the bottom of the page. What have you been reading of late?

  1. An audio of Swallows and Amazons? Did you find it at the library? Or a downloadable version? The children are very much enjoying audio books right now, and we would love to track a good reading of Swallows and Amazons down!

We are just finishing up The Cricket in Time Square – we kept 7 crickets for a week to observe and it seemed an appropriate accompaniment.
