Building Connection + Giving Thanks
In the Middle Ages people marked the beginning of the seasons differently. In the old way of reckoning, we ushered in Winter with St Martin’s Day on November 11th.
This turning year I learned that early Celtic Christians celebrated Advent for 40 days to mirror the other great penitential season of Lent. In this model, Advent begins today and stretches out to Epiphany encompassing Thanksgiving, traditional Advent, and the 12 Days of Christmas. Susan Forshey from Contemplative Cottage has created a wonderful printable calendar to help you mark the days and keep the season.
I really like the idea of Thanksgiving becoming a part of our Advent keeping. Because really all our gratitude is centered on that baby that was born in the deep mid-winter.

I think my family naturally gravitates toward observing Advent and all of the winter holidays beginning at Martinmas (which is Emmeline’s birthday!). I love these words of yours: “Because really all our gratitude is centered on that baby that was born in the deep mid-winter.” Amen.♥
