rhythm

sept 09 070

our days together have settled into a rhythm.  mornings are much the same: coffee and warm cocoa and maybe a few books read in between breakfast and showers and Papa out the door.  then we play and change diapers.  soon, Nico is ready for his morning power nap.  then comes the sweetness.

after the boy is down, Mabel and i work on something together.   instead of rushing to the computer, instead of drinking another cup of coffee, instead of reading the Book Review, i spend this little slice of time focused on her.  we might start bread or maybe paint or have a tea party or practice letters or just go outside and enjoy each other.  yesterday, inspired by Larksong, we made rosewater.  here’s our simple recipe:

  • 1 cup rose petals
  • 1 cup water
  • a quarter cup vodka

let steep in a cool, dark place for a week.

(she looks so guilty next to that big bottle of vodka!)

she is able to settle because she knows that she’ll have my attention.  and i feel like our time together is well spent; it feels like we’re doing important work.  this isn’t a schedule or one more thing on an impossibly long to-do list.  it’s simple attention.  it’s what’s near to hand.  it’s finding ways to nurture all of us.

oh, and Mabel’s sweet dress is from Larksong too!  a thousand thanks!

  1. Awesome! I love the smell of rosewater – reminds me of my Great Aunt Ruth – ladylike and old fashioned. 🙂

So glad you’re finding time to have some special time to connect one-on-one with Mabel.
