The Wonder Project :: Take Photographs

Taking pictures is a natural way to slow down.  It’s also a handy tool for tracking the colors or patterns that you are noticing.  Almost all of us have a phone in our pockets that can take pictures.  And almost all of my pictures are taken with my cell phone.  Notice I didn’t say an iPhone.  I have a phone from the grocery store, but the camera is still alright.  It doesn’t do anything fancy and it doesn’t shoot well in low light.  But if it’s true that the best camera is the one you have with you, then it’s a trusted tool.

Last year I joined Instagram because I wanted to take part in Gluebook Parties hosted by Bare Branch Blooming.  Then in May I got the chance to go to a Wild + Free conference where everyone knows each other primarily through Instagram.  It’s been a very fun year growing my IG skills!

I got a dslr for my birthday and have loved shooting in manual again!  It’s such a treat to be able to play with the aperture and blur the background.  I first learned how to take photographs with a Pentax K1000 in college.  It’s been so fun to return to the practice. I didn’t know how much I missed it.  I am really looking forward to working with a tripod inside this winter in low light.

This summer I participated in a Contemplative Photography class with Kim Manley Ort.  Her newsletter is not to be missed.  She curates a collection of thoughtful posts that continue to thrill me each week.  The way that Kim approaches photography is with an open hand.  She is willing to stop and receive the image.  It’s an inspiring way to approach do much more than photography.

  1. Hi Kortney,
I recently found your blog after listing to the podcast that you and Pam Barnhill recored. I was so inspired about the session. I was happy to find and read your blog. I have acquired so much information.

Your post today reminds me that I also love taking photos. I usually take them with my phone, as well. However, my daughter had a special event approaching so I decided to take out my “real” camera 🙂 I had forgotten how much I love photography. I have never taken a class and most likely do not use my camera to its fullest potential. I am thinking about doing this, though.

Anyway, thank you for all your posts…..they bring peace to my soul.

PS I was at the Wild and Free conference last May, as well I love that community, So glad you are part of it, too.
