Every Ordinary Thing

God is ever working on our behalf–St Ignatius

Every ordinary thing in your life is a word of God’s love–Caryll Houselander

People laugh at coincidence as a way of relegating it to the realm of the absurd and therefore not having to take seriously the possibility that there is a lot more going on than we either know or care to know.

Who can say what it is that’s going on? But I suspect that part of it anyway is that every once and so often we hear

a whisper from the wings that goes something like this,

“You’ve turned up at the right place at the right time. You’re doing fine. Don’t ever think you’ve been forgotten.”

Coincidences are God’s way of getting our attention–Fredrick Buechner

We are more together
than we know, how else could we keep on discovering
we are more together than we thought?–Wendell Berry

I have a blue notebook that I keep on my desk to record the tiny, reliable patterns that emerge from the tangle of days.

One more way to remember what went right.

  1. This is so lovley, Kortney. Thank you. Love Caryll Houselander! Speaking of ordinary things–well, this is actually a very non-ordinary thing now that I think of it: just this morning, before seeing your post, I picked up a certain ibis feather and placed it on my desk for a dose of much-needed inspiration. It is in beautiful shape, still–think of its life! Be well. xo

    1. Feathers older than my children! Just yesterday I was trying to describe the wonder of curlews to my inland-born kids.

I found Houselander through your recommendation. She is a worthy companion.

  2. lovely quotes, lovely thoughts
And a notebook to record the ways you see the “patterns” in the “tangle”- oooo, I like that!

    1. The notebook is small, so I can visit it often without the expectation of a grand account!
