Homeschooling High School: Graduation Requirements
Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start! Along with determining grades and making a transcript, graduation requirements may be one of the most intimidating aspects of homeschooling high school. But that fear comes from the specter of school that still hangs over us.
Homeschooling laws vary from state to state, and you can look those up easily online. In my state, there are no requirements for high school because homeschoolers do not earn state diplomas.
No requirements!
It took me a while to wrap my head around that idea. Essentially, it means we have a lot of freedom to create a course of study that fits our kids. But how exactly do you start?
I compared the graduation requirements of the local school district and a private college prep high school. I also looked up the entrance requirements for a few local universities. To attend the state university that I graduated from, students have to have a GED. But that is not required at the private university in my neighborhood.
Every school that I looked up had slightly different requirements. Again, that means there is a degree of freedom in creating courses that support the work our kids are already doing. This is going to be a common refrain throughout the series. We have more freedom that we might think. And that should bring a good measure of peace.
