Homeschooling High School: Do What You Want

Take a minute to let that sink in.

In my state, homeschoolers do not receive a diploma. So there are no requirements. We really can do whatever we want. Whatever our kids are interested in, whatever lights them up, whatever supports our kids. For the most part, our days still look very traditional with an emphasis on the humanities. But we have left behind the abstract idea of “10th grade English” in favor of a rich and varied curriculum.

It’s certainly a good idea to research college entrance requirements. It can vary widely. So research a few different places that might be a good fit for your student. And certainly make space in your plans to meet those requirements.

But after that, there is so much freedom. In my next post, I’ll talk about how we are using project based classes to explore science topics that my daughter is interested in.

• Brainstorm ideas of the kinds of learning experiences your student could explore. Think about things that could be outside of normal high school curriculum but that also might be the perfect fit for your child.
• Have your high schooler do the same!
