“Leadership qualities” are not qualities that enable people to attract followers, but those that enable them to do without them. They include, at the very least,
courage,
endurance,
patience,
humor,
flexibility,
resourcefulness,
stubbornness,
a keen sense of reality,
and the ability to keep a cool and clear head even when things are going badly.
True leaders, in short, do not make people into followers, but into leaders.
–John Holt in Growing Without Schooling Issue 2
Oh, that’s good. I’ll have to do some reading over at those archives. I really enjoyed How Children Fail.
glad to see you again!
the archives are a bit hard to navigate…i wonder about trying to read them on a tablet or other reading device???
my favorite John Holt book is Never Too Late. it’s about his study of music and the cello. excellent! next favorite is Teach Your Own.
but like Sandra Dodd says, John Holt was a man without children…we homeschool mamas are living this reality deeply every day with our children. we are becoming our own experts. i guess those are the exact *leadership qualities* Holt was talking about!
