poetry friday :: teatime treats
we got a package in the mail today. this is nothing new. but this package was extra special. it came from our cousins and aunt + uncle in California. i think our Aunt Rachael must have been a fairy godmother in some magical other life; she sends the best packages!
first there was a poem, “Animal Crackers” by Christopher Morley:
Animal crackers and cocoa to drink,
That is the finest of suppers I think;
When I’m grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these.
What do YOU choose when you’re offered a treat?
When Mother says, ‘What would you like best to eat?’
Is it waffles and syrup, or cinnamon toast?
It’s cocoa and animals that I love most!
The kitchen’s the cosiest place that I know;
The kettle is singing, the stove is aglow,
And there in the twilight, how jolly to see
The cocoa and animals waiting for me.
Daddy and Mother dine later in state,
With Mary to cook for them, Susan to wait;
But they don’t have nearly as much fun as I
Who eat in the kitchen with Nurse standing by;
And Daddy once said, he would like to be me
Having cocoa and animals once more for tea.
can you guess what else our package held? hot cocoa mix (with chocolate chips!) and animal crackers! a perfect afternoon treat…what a wonderful beginning to Poetry Month! more sweet poetry treats can be found at The Poem Farm today.
What a sweet package! 🙂
cocoa and animal crackers? I’m in! Sweet, indeed!
What a cool aunt! Enjoy your animal crackers. I still love them, too.
I recognize that boy in the chair! He’s from Poems to Read to the Very Young. My copy is worn and mildewed, but I still enjoy it. 🙂 I think I should try to have such a supper with the children some time.
I’m so thrilled you enjoyed the treats! Yes, Brandy, that’s the book. The illustrations are precious.
What fun! We should ALL remember to pack poems with every package we send!
Loved it, Kortney. Reminded me of A.A. Milne!
Oh, I do love this poem. And your family. What an inspiring idea for all of us to consider for those we love… Thank you for sharing this peek into your words and snack!
